HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The women's soccer team volunteered its time at the Boys and Girls Club of Huntington Valley on Monday Jan. 18. With the University closed due to Martin Luther King Day, 16 members of the team turned out to help at the Optimist Club of Huntington sponsored event.
"It's very exciting that this event was initiated by the team and they got a very good showing," head coach Kevin Long said. "It was a good opportunity for them to see another side of Huntington that they don't always get to see and it's something that we wish we could do more often."
Junior defender Emma Harrison (Christchurch, New Zealand) was asked by professor Barbra Haptonstall to do the community service for an elementary education class. Harrison recruited fellow teammates, who were also joined with other classes from the Exercise Sports Science and the Park and Recreation classes to teach about 40 children basketball skills.
The MU students split up, some pairing up with kids and the rest split between three stations, a passing station, a shooting station and a dribbling station.
"I think my teammates enjoyed it and they said that it was something that they would like to do again," Harrison said. "I do stuff like this a lot being an elementary education major. I thought to do this would be an eye opener for my teammates and with their reactions I think it worked."
The Herd will have another opportunity to participate next year, as the event is held annually.
