RICHMOND, Ky. - The Marshall University women's tennis team grabbed a pair of 7-0 wins on Friday as they defeated Southern Illinois in the morning and host Eastern Kentucky in the afternoon to improve to 3-0 on the season.
The Herd dominated play in its first ever meeting with the Salukies of Southern Illinois. Doubles action saw all Marshall pairings earn wins to give them an early 1-0 advantage.
In singles action, all six MU players defeated SIU players en route to a perfect 6-0 record, and a 7-0 overall victory. Leading the way from the No. 1 spot was No. 35 Michaela Kissell who blanked Melanie Delsart 6-0, 6-0 to earn her first victory of the season.
The afternoon match with Eastern Kentucky, the defending Ohio Valley Conference Champions, was much of the same as the Herd dominated play and nabbed another 7-0 victory.
Kissell once again blanked her opponent, while Dominika Zaprazna, Isabell Raich, Catherine Kellner, Kristina Koprcina and Kara Kucin all earned victories.
Through three games, Marshall has yet to lose a game as they have won all nine of their double matches, and all 18 of their singles matches.
"We played much better today compared to last weekend," head coach John Mercer said. "We played well today, and for it to be on the road says a lot about our team. We are off to a good start at 3-0 and we hope to improve to 4-0 tomorrow afternoon."
The Herd is back in action tomorrow afternoon as it hosts Eastern Michigan at 12 p.m. and looks to continue the unbeaten streak. The match will be held at the Huntington Tennis Club next to the Barboursville Mall.
