HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University volleyball team dropped the first set, but rallied to win the next three as the Thundering Herd defeated UAB, 3-1 (17-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21) on Sunday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center in Conference USA action.
"We weren't playing with any enthusiasm in the first set," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "We did a heck of a job progressing through the rest of the night. We had 10 service errors, but six of them were in the first set."
"I am proud we were able to come back and play strong; Cameron Yoho had an outstanding game for us," Jacobs said.
Yoho posted a career-high 15 kills as MU upped its record to 9-7 overall and 3-1 in league play. Yoho registered a .481 attacking percentage, connecting 15 times on 27 swings with just two errors.
UAB (4-12, 1-3 C-USA) was led by Jordan McDonald's 12 kills and libero Heather Thomas' 24 digs in the loss.
Elizabeth Herman posted a 20-kill performance, while Elizabeth Fleming tallied her sixth double-double of the season with 53 assists and 13 digs to propel the Herd to victory.
Herman connected for nine kills in the second stanza to help shift momentum. As a team, the Herd hit .371 (17K-4E-35 TA) in set two and cruised the rest of the night, winning in four sets to earn a split in C-USA matches over the weekend.
Five MU players recorded 10-or-more digs, led by libero Dorothy Rahal, who recorded 19. Katy Schad produced 16 digs on the stat sheet, with Fleming (13), Milligan (12) and Laura Der (10) rounding out the double-digit dig performers.
"We served tough and got UAB out of system," Jacobs said. "We've got to continue to get a good swing on the first ball. The transition game is getting better and Liz Fleming is finding our middles more and more."
Next on the schedule for the Herd is a trip to El Paso, Texas, to play the UTEP Miners on Friday and Saturday.
