HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - After jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the second half, the Marshall University men's soccer team allowed a late equalizer in regulation and the golden goal 51 seconds into overtime to drop a Conference USA match to Kentucky 2-1 Wednesday night in front of 1,147 fans at Sam Hood Field.
As it has done all season, the Thundering Herd (7-3-2, 2-2-0 C-USA) found the net early in the second half. The goal went down in the stats as a Kentucky own goal as Tom Jackson applied pressure to the UK defense and forced David Harrison to blast the ball into his own defender and over Wildcats goalie Tyler Beadle.
Kentucky's Jacob Kemper was dealt a straight red card in the 75th minute for slide-tackling MU goalie Daniel Withrow, however, the Wildcats found the equalizing goal eight minutes later courtesy of Tyler Riggs as he beat Withrow in the lower right corner.
It would take the short-handed Wildcats less than a minute into the first overtime to notch the game winner and send herd faithful home unhappy. UK's Sam Brooks collected the loose ball in the MU box and buried the ball into the lower right corner.
"They wanted it more than we did. They won every 50-50 ball. It wasn't pretty but it worked for them," said Head Coach Bob Gray. "When you are up a man, and up a goal, it should be game over. But give them credit. I guess they can consider this payback for us beating them in overtime last year."
The path to Memphis for the C-USA tournament gets no easier as the Thundering Herd is on the road for its next two games against No.8 SMU and No.5 Tulsa. MU and SMU tangle this Sunday, Oct. 10 at 8 p.m. EST.
