HOUSTON, Texas- The Marshall University swimming and diving team completed the first day of the Conference USA Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday with top-20 program times in the 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay.
The Herd is in sixth place with 52 points after competing in two events at the CRWC Natatorium. In the 200 medley relay, the team of Erin Kennedy, Kristin Wheatley, Arlie Rykosky and Briana Burns finished in sixth with a time of 1:47.63. The time is clocked as the sixth-best performance in MU history.
"We dropped four seconds off our 200 medley relay from previous times this year," said head coach Leonard Kraus. "We had great splits throughout the race and it was a nice way to start the meet off well."
In the 800 freestyle relay, MU saw another top-20 time in the team of Lauren Fairbanks, Megan Demeter, Jenny Johnsson and Jenae Moreno. The relay punched in with a time of 7:47.80 to take a sixth-place finish. The tally is the 14th-best performance in the event at Marshall.
"I am pleased with the performances in the 800 freestyle relay," said Kraus. "Today we got things going and we are looking forward to the 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle tomorrow."
MU returns Thursday when it opens trial runs at 10 a.m. in the 500 freestyle, 200 IM and 50 freestyle. Prelims for the 3-meter dive will begin at 1 p.m. Finals for day two of the championships are slated to begin at 6 p.m. for the: 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, 3-meter dive and 400 medley relay.
