Final Stats

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Marshall University softball team (10-4) fell to Charlotte 2-0 in the championship game of the UNC Charlotte Green & White Tournament. MU's Rebecca Gamby earned most valuable player for the tournament.

Gamby was tops on the club for the weekend hitting at a .500 clip (6-for-12), tallying one home run and a team-best four doubles. The sophomore had a 1.083 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage.

"It is great for Gamby to receive an individual honor," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "She came out offensively this weekend. We continue to see good individual performances and I look forward to when we put it together as a team."

Charlotte (11-1) tallied the first run of the game in the second inning as Carol Buchan came home from third in a Thundering Herd throw-down to second.

The Niners would come back with a solo run in the third when Whitney Williams scored, unearned, on a Tenaya Tucker single through the left side, giving Charlotte a 2-0 advantage. Charlotte would attempt to bring in more runs in the fourth, but strong Marshall defense shut down all opportunities.

With two outs and 49er runners on first and second, center fielder Taylor Thompson snagged a deep hit in left center in a diving catch to notch the third out and keep MU still within reach leading into the fifth inning.

"Giving up the two unearned runs ended up being the difference," said Stanton. "We did a much better job adjusting to their pitcher in this contest; we had seven hits and good quality contact right at people. The only part of the game I am disappointed in was during the first and second inning our leadoff batter got a hit and we failed to execute the bunt."

The MU defense would hold Charlotte to two runs, but the Herd offense was unable to convert runs as Marshall would fall 2-0.

Katie Murphree (6-2) recorded two strikeouts in six innings of work. Top hitter for the Herd was Alianna Telles, who went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Marshall softball will be back in action when it hosts the Marshall Invitational from March 5th through 7th at Dot Hicks Field.
