Softball To Finish March On The Road

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Shonda Stanton and crew will face UNC-Greensboro and ECU during spring break as the Marshall University softball team (15-12, 1-5 C-USA) begins a 10-game road swing on March 24th against the Spartans.
The Thundering Herd will open with a doubleheader on Wednesday in Greensboro, N.C., with first pitch slated for a 3 p.m. start. UNCG (10-14) is coming off a pair of wins at College of Charleston over the weekend and is led at the plate by Alex Emeterio, who is hitting at a .338 clip.
The Spartans' ace Cory Mattson heads the pitching staff with a 2.42 ERA, two shutouts and a 6-6 record. As a team UNCG sports a 3.23 ERA.
Marshall will then make the trip to Conference USA foe ECU for a showdown in Greenville. The Herd will play a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m.; and end the weekend with a noon game on Sunday.
The Pirates (11-11) have yet to play a conference game in the 2010 season, with its opening C-USA series at Tulsa being called due to inclement weather.
Mari Gusman-Brown is tops on the squad in batting average (.373), home runs (3), slugging percentage (.667) and on-base percentage (.459). Right-handed pitcher Toni Paisley (7-7) will offer tough competition for the Herd, as she holds a 2.03 ERA in 89.2 innings worked.
The Herd will look to Rebecca Gamby and Caitlyn Jackson at the dish, as the duo is tops with a .338 and .337 batting average, respectively. Alianna Telles is not far behind with a .326 average and a team-best 18 runs scored, six home runs, 23 RBI and a .651 slugging percentage.
The MU bullpen has used its depth recently, but will continue to look to Katie Murphree (9-7) to guide the way. Murphree has a 2.71 ERA in a team-most 100.2 innings pitched.
