HATTIESBURG, Miss. - After inclement weather pushed Saturday's matchup late into the evening between the Marshall University softball team (24-23, 3-13 C-USA) and Southern Miss, the Herd fell 6-0 at the USM Softball Complex.
With the scoreboard remaining unlit heading into the bottom of the third, the Golden Eagles (19-22, 4-12 C-USA) posted the first run of the game after Megan Hill came home in an Alexis Hurley at-bat.
The Thundering Herd defense would then go on to retire the side in the fourth and fifth innings but it wouldn't be enough as USM would tack on five runs in the sixth, four unearned, to extend a 6-0 lead.
With two outs on the board, MU would bring in Rachel Rillo to log the final out of the frame. Katie Murphree (15-13) would take the loss after working 5.2 innings in the circle and striking out four.
Going 1-for-2 at the plate for the Herd was Jazmine Valle and Marcena Bertoldo - who notched a double and also reached base on her 14th hit-by-pitch this season. Also tallying a hit was Melissa Loesing, who went 1-for-1 at the dish.
Gabby Luciani went the distance in the shutout for the Golden Eagles, moving her to 9-8 on the season.
Sunday's game has been rescheduled for a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. (EST), with the second game to be played 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first contest. Game one of the twin-bill will be aired on CBS C.
