Herd Softball Takes On Houston

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University softball team will host the Houston Cougars at Dot Hicks Field in a doubleheader on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m., and a single contest on Sunday at noon. The Thundering Herd is 24-25 overall and 3-15 in Conference USA.

The Herd faces a UH squad that is 26-22 overall and 10-10 in C-USA play. The Cougars are paced offensively by Ashleigh Jones, who is hitting at a .346 clip and boasts a team-best 55 hits. In the circle, UH has a 3.01 ERA as a staff and are led by Bailey Watts (12-9), who posts a 2.70 ERA in 142.2 innings pitched.

At the plate Marshall receives power from Jazmine Valle and Caitlyn Jackson who are hitting at .331 and .325, respectively. Jackson leads the team in hits with 51 and is tied for a team-best 11 doubles, while Valle has notched a club-high 33 RBI.

Katie Murphree continues to be the stronghold in the circle for the Herd - with 15 wins under her belt, the senior has a 2.63 ERA, and 176 strikeouts in 186.1 innings pitched.

On the bases, Marshall is seventh in the nation in stolen bases, averaging 2.33 per game. MU currently has a nation-high 114 stolen bases. Jessica Hughes ranks 30th in the country for stolen bases per game with 0.56.

Saturday is Student "Study Break" Day and all students are invited to come out and take a break from studying to cheer on the Herd! Free Marshall mugs will be provided to the first 50 students with a Marshall I.D.

Marshall softball is hosting Lil Sis Recognition Day in between games during Saturday's doubleheader at Dot Hicks Field. The Lil Sis' will be recognized with a program certificate on the field in between games and will receive a t-shirt and signed poster upon check-in.

Pizza will also be provided for the Lil Sis' after the recognition ceremony. All attendees must report to the designated check-in table by 2 p.m. on Saturday. Please RSVP with your Big Sis if you have not done so already.

Saturday also marks Chamber of Commerce Day; members and their families are invited to spend the day with Marshall softball.
