MOREHEAD, Ky. - A 2-for-2 performance and a home run from Victoria Marvin helped lead the Marshall University softball team (18-19) to a 4-2 victory over Morehead State (18-14) in game one on Wednesday. Alianna Telles recorded two homers of her own in game two, but it wasn't enough to secure a win as the Herd fell, 9-3, to split the doubleheader.
Katie Murphree (11-10) went the distance in game one's victory, striking out five Eagles along the way, while retiring the final 11 batters of the contest.
"We did a great job offensively pounding out 20 hits on the day," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "This was the type of offense we need to carry into our Conference USA series with UCF."
The Thundering Herd put up two runs in the first frame after a single up the middle from Rebecca Gamby plated Taylor Thompson. Marvin would follow two batters later with a single to bring around Jazmine Valle and give MU a 2-0 advantage.
Marvin finished the game 2-for-2 at the dish with two RBI and one run scored.
MSU would record a single run in the bottom of the inning as Kayla Brill came home, unearned, to close the gap at 2-1.
The Eagles would come back again in the third to knot the score at 2-2 on a Amber Riddle single to left that brought home Brill.
The proof was in the pudding as Marshall came back to take a 3-2 lead in the sixth after Marvin homered for her first career long ball. The Herd would tack on one final run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly from Melanie Stoehr to score Caitlyn Jackson and give MU the 4-2 victory.
Marshall out-hit Morehead State 12-4 in the win, with Jackson going 3-for-4 and Gamby posting a 2-for-3 tally in the box.
MSU moved through three pitchers in the game, with Sarah Funston (7-6) taking the loss after 6.0 innings of work. Ashley Boyd and Alex Gjevre did not factor into the decision as Gjevre saw 1.0 innings in the circle and Boyd came out after facing three batters.
In game two, the Eagles put up the first two runs on the board as the tandem of Riddle and Brill struck again. Riddle homered to left center to plate Brill and give MSU a 2-0 lead after the first.
Thompson would pull Marshall within reach in the second inning, as the freshman stole third and then scored, unearned, on a MSU error.
Alianna Telles would add in her two cents as she dropped a solo-homer to center field in the third to tie the game at 2-2. She would finish the game 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.
The bottom of the fourth put Marshall behind 6-2 as the Eagles would tally four runs on four hits.
Telles would answer in the next frame with her second long ball of the game, her ninth of the season, to put the score at 6-3 leading in to the bottom of the fifth. This is the first time in Telles' career she has posted multiple home runs in a game.
Home runs would continue to be the deciding factor as Riddle hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth to give MSU a 9-3 cushion.
The Herd was unable to post a comeback as it would fall in a final score of 9-3. Marshall saw solid performances at the plate from Gamby, who went 2-for-3 and Jackson, who was 3-for-4.
Rachel Rillo garnered the loss for MU after working 3.1 innings in the circle, pushing her to 2-1 on the year. Jessica Ferrick closed the final 2.2 innings in the circle and struck out two batters.
Gjevre (10-7) picked up the win for MSU after throwing a complete game with two strikeouts.
Marshall softball returns to Dot Hicks Field to host a nine-game home stand beginning this Saturday, as the Herd hosts UCF in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
