Pair of Softball Signees Capture NJCAA National Championship Title

ST. GEORGE, Utah - Two Marshall University 2010 softball signees, Erika Bennett and Amanda Lara, captured the National Junior College Athletic Association Division I softball title on Saturday after Bennett pitched a one-hit shutout to give Miami Dade College its first national title.
The Lady Sharks outlasted Wallace State, 7-0, en route to the championship title. Bennett was named tournament most valuable player after going the distance and striking out five along the way. Through the tournament, Bennett went 4-0, with a 0.54 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 26.0 innings of work. Lara connected to go 2-for-4 at the dish against WSC in the championship and hit at a 0.385 clip (10-for-26) during the tournament while also manufacturing eight runs.
In 2010, Bennett and Lara were both named to the Atlantic District All-Tournament Team at pitcher and infield, respectively. MDC finished the 2010 with a 51-7-1 record.
Bennett finished the season ranked third in the nation with a 0.46 ERA in 136.0 innings pitched. She tallied a 19-1 record in 25 games played and struck out 184 in the 2010 campaign.
