HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall University softball team (24-30-1, 3-20-1 C-USA) concluded the 2010 season with a 7-4 loss on Sunday against Tulsa (31-20, 14-6 C-USA) at Dot Hicks Field.

Tulsa opened the game with a two-out rally in the first as a single off the bat of Vanessa Vice plated Caitlin Everett giving TU a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Golden Hurricane stretched their lead to 2-0 on a solo-homer to left field by Skylar Swanson.

Caitlyn Jackson then came in for relief of Katie Murphree to log the final out of the frame. Murphree left after 1.2 innings worked and two strikeouts.

"I am going to miss our seniors," said head coach Shonda Stanton. "I wish we could have had Katie for more than two years; no one prepared harder than she did. Caitlyn had that pure talent and refreshing spirit and Marcena had that drive and feistiness on the field. This is a tough way to finish a season."

TU came back in the top of the third to extend a 4-0 cushion after a homer by Samantha Cobb scored Lauren Lindsay.

The Marshall defense held Tulsa off the board in the fourth, with an inning-closing double play by Alianna Telles and Marcena Bertoldo - the double play was MU's 12th.

In the fourth, the Thundering Herd manufactured two runs to make it a 4-2 ball game after a double down the right field line by Melanie Stoehr scored Rebecca Gamby and Jessica Hughes.

Tulsa tallied a pair of runs in the sixth after a single by Cobb brought around Swanson and Everett to push a 6-2 TU advantage. The Golden Hurricane did not back away as Cassidy Bowen homered to left field to extend a 7-2 lead over the Herd in the seventh.

The Herd elected to re-enter Murphree in the circle during the seventh, as Jackson left after pitching 4.2 innings and striking out two along the way. Murphree garners the loss after a cumulative 2.1 innings pitched, ending her season with a final record of 15-18.

Marshall notched two runs in the bottom of the seventh, off a single to right by Gamby scored Telles and a single up the middle by Samantha Spurlock plated Jackson.

The rally was not enough as the game was called on a predetermined game-stop time with bases loaded, as the Herd fell 7-4.
