CLEVELAND, Ohio - Marshall University's Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied a goal and an assist as the Herd dropped its season-opener, 3-2, to Cleveland State in Sunday afternoon's women's soccer match at Krenzler field.

The Vikings erupted early, scoring twice in the opening half. A corner kick from Jessica Bound found teammate Valerie Stahl, who headed the ball past freshman goalkeeper Caroline Harwell (Mooresville, N.C.) and put Cleveland State on top 1-0. Natalie Daniels blasted a ball from five yards out off a cross from Samantha Salamon late in the half to give CSU a 2-0 lead.

Katie Ball (Lousiville, Ky.) put the Herd on the board with a header off a cross from DeSumma in the 61st minute. The goal was Ball's first since the 2008 season, when she tallied two against Mount St. Mary's.

Jessica McCloy halted MU's comeback with a header of her own off a cross from Taylor Miller to extend the Vikings lead to 3-1.

DeSumma brought the Herd within one goal again, as she connected on a rebound from a missed penalty kick in the 76th minute.

DeSumma ended the afternoon with a game-high four shots, placing all of them on goal.

Cleveland State goalkeeper Kelly Zinkiewich compiled seven saves on the day to earn her first victory on the season.

The Herd returns to action on Friday, Aug. 27, at the Winthrop Tournament. Marshall will do battle with the Eagles at 7:00 p.m. EST. The Vikings continue a five-game home stand against Gannon on the 27th.
