HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - In its final tune up before the regular season, the Marshall University men's soccer team topped the University of Charleston 1-0 on Wednesday night at Sam Hood Field.
Sophomore Zach Hunter provided the lone goal of the match in the 20th minute when Tom Jackson and Matt Risher combined to find Hunter at the top of the box. Hunter's one-time strike ripped the lower left corner of the net, beating UC goalie Sean Teepen.
"I was happy with the first 45 minutes," head coach Bob Gray said. "We were unlucky to not get more. We subbed a lot of players to get looks at other players and Charleston kept their starters in. It was good for our young players to face some adversity.
"They [Charleston] are a great side, ranked seventh nationally in Division II. They made the Elite Eight last year and they have the ability to make the Final Four this year. But overall we got what we wanted from this game and we have momentum heading into our real season."
The Thundering Herd finished the preseason at 2-0 with tonight's win and a victory against Gardner-Webb last Saturday. MU opens the regular season next Wednesday when the Herd welcomes the Xavier Musketeers to Sam Hood Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
A reminder to fans that there will be an entry fee into all soccer matches this year. Season passes are available, as well as single game ticket, cash only. Admission is free to all Marshall students.
