ROCK HILL, S.C.- Marshall University's Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa.) tallied a goal and an assist en route to a 3-3 tie against Liberty on Sunday afternoon's double overtime nonconference women's soccer game at Eagle Field in the closing day of the Winthrop Invitational.

The Herd stands at 0-1-2 on the season, while Liberty sits at 1-1-2.

MU again found themselves down early, as the Flames struck twice in the opening half. Silvia Betancourt beat a Herd defender and slotted a shot into the top left corner of the goal to score her first of two goals on the afternoon.

An own goal by Marshall would put them down 2-0 at the 15:35 mark.

"It was a frustrating weekend, both games we gave up two goals early and put ourselves in a hole," head coach Kevin Long said. "The positive is that our offense was still able to generate opportunities and able to score. This is a young team and they showed resilience to come back in both games."

The Thundering Herd would answer with three straight goals. Liberty goalkeeper Ashley Nyholt fumbled a Marshall shot attempt, leading to DeSumma shooting into an open net, for her second goal of the season and put the Herd on the board.

Sarah Vinson (Amelia, Ohio) dribbled into the goal box from 20 yards out and beat her defender to blast a shot back across the near side to tie the game at two.

Marisa Leconte (Greer, S.C.) gave the Herd its first lead of the season with a goal off a through ball from DeSumma.

Betancourt's header into an open net off a cross from teammate Jordan Woody would tie the game at three in the 77th minute and that is how the contest would stay throught two overtimes.

DeSumma and Vinson were named to the all-tournament team. DeSumma tallied 12 shots on the weekend, along with one goal and one assist. Vinson notched a goal in each game in the tournament.

"We look forward to coming home and getting back to work before our home-opener this weekend," Long continued.

The Thundering Herd returns to action on Friday, Sept. 3 as it hosts the Best Western Huntington Mall Invitational. Marshall will battle Radford, with kickoff set for 5 p.m. EST.
