League Play Resumes For Thundering Herd Men

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Thundering Herd men's basketball team returns to league play on Saturday, playing host to East Carolina on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. at the Cam Henderson Center.

Marshall is coming off of its biggest win of the season as it took first win over West Virginia in five seasons, 75-71, in the 2011 Capital Classic. The Herd built up a lead of as many as 24 points in the second half while holding WVU to 21 first-half points and 33.3% shooting for the game, both season lows.

Damier Pitts led the way with 25 points for MU, tying his career best. The junior was solid once again from the free throw line, making 10-of-11 attempts. Over the last four games, Pitts has connected on 34 out of 36 tries.

DeAndre Kane recorded 18 points against the Mountaineers. The redshirt freshman hit 5-11 field goals and was 3-for-6 from three-point range.

East Carolina enters Saturday's conference match with a 10-8 record and an even 2-2 mark in C-USA. Last time out, the Pirates became the first team to win on UCF's home floor, taking a 74-62 victory over the Knights. East Carolina's other league win came over Tulane on January 15. Jontae Sherrod is the leading scorer for the Pirates with 14.6 PPG. He scored a game-high 21 points in the victory over UCF.

Marshall owns a 10-4 mark against East Carolina and has won the last five games in the series. Since entering C-USA in 2005, the Herd has won eight out of ten meetings. Marshall has also won all seven home contests against ECU, including a 100-49 win in the Henderson Center last season.

Following Saturday's game, Marshall travels to Birmingham for a matchup against UAB on Wednesday before returning home on January 29 to face Memphis.
