HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall women's soccer head coach Kevin Long has announced dates for the team's 2011 spring schedule. All eight games will be on the road and features four teams that appeared in the NCAA tournament last season from eight different conferences.
"We are excited, we have some competitive teams in JMU and Virginia Tech, we have Ohio University and we've got Wright State as a newcomer in there. We are equally as excited that we end a little early this year. Last year we saw that our players were getting a little ready to go home the closer it came to May. So with that we are eager to start earlier so we have events scheduled in March," Long said.
The Thundering Herd will open competition on Mar. 16 when it travels to Charleston and concludes its stint on Apr. 17 on the road at Virginia Tech. The stretch in between includes trips to James Madison (Apr. 2), Morehead State (Apr. 6) and Ohio University (Apr. 10).
Marshall bid farewell to the program's all-time leading scorer in Erika Duncan, as well as forward Marisa Leconte. The Herd's backline also suffered the losses of Emma Harrison, Kristen Berquist and Meghan Wetzel due to graduation. This spring MU will look to fill their shoes with a bundle of young talent.
"We are just excited, it's the spring and like any spring we are looking forward to seeing our younger players step up," Long said. "We lost a huge, heavy class of playing time and we are eager to see and find out how and what ways our current roster is going to step up and solve the problems."
