HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Despite falling 160.5-136.5 to Vanderbilt, the Marshall University swimming and diving team saw standout performances from Heather Moore and Sarah Kay.

With the loss, the Thundering Herd move to 2-6 on the season, while Vanderbilt registered its first win of the season to improve to 1-6.

"This was a tough loss tonight," said head coach Russell Hunt. "Vanderbilt is a well-coached team and we knew coming in we could rely on a strong back half to this meet. Unfortunately, we did not capitalize on some early scoring opportunities and the final charge came too little too late."

In the 200 IM, Heather Moore was tops with a finish in 2:10.80, which puts her at sixth all-time in the MU record books. Finishing the event in second and third, respectively, were Vera Niemeyer (2:11.84) and Sarah Kay (2:13.47). Moore would then go on to record a career-best time of 10:24.00 in the 1,000 Freestyle, which rings in at second in the history books.

Kay would tally two first-place finishes of her own on the day, clocking in at 57.97 in the 100 Butterfly and 2:02.94 in the 200 Butterfly. Teammate Arlie Rykosky would follow in second in the 200, with a time of 2:08.47. Kay's time in the 200 Butterfly is a career best for the freshman and ranks as the 12th-best performance ever at Marshall in the event.

Also putting up solid performances were Sarah Schimenti, who finished second in the 200 Breaststroke with a time of 2:29.57, and Lauren Fairbanks who came in second in the 100 Freestyle with a time of 54.94.

Diver Kayla Edwards improved a career-best score in the 3 Meter with a tally of 223.88, moving her to eighth in the MU records.

"I saw some very positive things today and we will continue to build on those successes in the weeks leading to the Conference USA Championships," Hunt said.

Marshall will conclude its regular season on Feb. 5, when it hosts James Madison at 2 p.m.
