James Madison Tops Swimming and Diving

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Despite falling to James Madison 145-94 on Saturday, the Marshall University swimming and diving team had a slew of impressive individual performances.
In exciting fashion, the Thundering Herd had career-best performances posted by every MU athlete in the 100 Freestyle. Heather Moore was the top Herd finisher in third (55.17), while Tiffany Aeling followed closely behind in fourth (55.71). Lauren Tarka (56.22) and Tara Banks (56.51) rounded out the Marshall finishers in fifth and sixth place, respectively.
Moore would post an additional two career-best times on the day; coming in third in the 200 Freestyle with a time of 1:56.45 and third in the 100 Breaststroke with a time of 1:11.00. Sarah Schimenti would be tops in the 100 Breaststroke in 1:10.30, followed by Sarah Kay in second at 1:10.75, which was a career best for the freshman.
Tarka put up a showing in the 50 Freestyle, coming in at second place with a time of 25.01, a career best that ranks 10th in Marshall record books. Emily Akalski finished soon after for third place with a time of 25.21, a career best in the 50 Freestyle. Akalski recorded her second career-best time on the night in the 100 Backstroke in a fourth-place showing with a time of 1:03.29.
In the 500 Freestyle, Vera Niemeyer clocked in with a career-best 5:28.23 time, while Taylor Brown finished with a season best 5:42.61. Niemeyer also took home a first-place finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:11.89.
Divers Haley Holmquist and Maribeth Smith tallied season-best scores in the 1 Meter. Holmquist recorded a score of 249.15 while Smith rang in at 215.55. Also nabbing a season-best mark was Lauren Rone, who scored 224.85 points in the 3 Meter.
Next up for Marshall Swimming and Diving is the Conference USA Championships in Houston, Texas from Feb. 23-26.
