Women's Golf Team Wins It All

CHARLESTON, S.C.- The ladies of the Thundering Herd women's golf team returned home from the 2011 Wendy's Invitational at Charleston Southern with full hands after claiming the trophy for a first place finish in the fall tournament.
Marshall posted team scores of 299 and 306 in the two-day event for a combined total of 605, which meant the team bested its closest opposition - UAB - by five strokes to win the 16 team tournament. The Herd's victory is its first since winning the First Market Bank Intercollegiate in March of 2008.
Sophomore Allison Harper was the catalyst for Marshall over the course of the competition, as she shot scores of 70 and 73 to finish tied for first in the tournament with Jacksonville's Natalie Schmett at 143. Harper's stellar performance was highlighted by a hole-in-one during the first round of play, and the junior ace displayed consistency and composure en-route to taking home the winners' medal .
Korakot Simsiriwong also showed strong for the Marshall ladies, finishing tied for 7th with a score of 149 via rounds of 75 and 74. The Herd's Rachel Thompson was next, as she tied for 30th following rounds of 75 and 81 for a two-round score of 156. Samantha DiDomenico wasn't far behind either, as she ended the event tied for 34th with scores of 79 and 78. Caitlyn Morrone shot scores of 87 and 84 to finish tied in 71st.
The tournament win means Marshall will carry some momentum into its final fall tournament of 2011, which is set to take place at the Peninsula Golf Club for the UAB Fall Beach Blast on October 31-November 1.
