HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Coming off a heartbreaking loss to the No. 6 Memphis Tigers and 1-1 tie to UAB last weekend, the Marshall University women's soccer team is eager to prove they still deserve to be known as contenders in the Conference USA. The Herd has a chance to prove themselves as they continue the home stand this weekend, welcoming No. 16 University of Central Florida and Southern Miss to Sam Hood Field.
Marshall has never defeated UCF in program history, however, in 2010 The Herd dropped a 2-1 game to the Knights as Central Florida drained two second-half goals in Orlando. MU looks to end the plague of losses UCF has caused over the years Friday. At 7-2-3 (2-1-1 C-USA) the Knights are led by Tishia Jewell, who has totaled 16 points on four goals and eight assists.
Sunday welcomes the Southern Miss to Huntington, where The Herd will play an afternoon affair against the Golden Eagles at 1 P.M. Southern Miss holds the all-time record between these two opponents four games to three, yet it was MU who stole a 1-0 road victory in 2010. Jordan Wagner leads the 3-7-3 (0-3-1 C-USA) Golden Eagles thus far in 2011 with eight points.
Head Coach Kevin Long knows that every game going forward is a must-win. "We know we are close with many of the leading teams within the division, and this weekend we have another opportunity to showcase that. We have played well against UCF in the past and we know that if we execute our game plan, we have a chance to compete. However, after last year's results it's imperative that we execute that plan for the entire 90 minutes of the game."
Long continued, "Ultimately we need to do more with the ball offensively and create ways to score. We have to embrace the mentality of a scoring unit."
Kickoff against UCF is set for 7 P.M. Friday night and those that cannot be in attendance can follow live stats and live radio broadcast here. Live stats for Sunday's 1 P.M. match against Southern Miss can be followed , along with live broadcast here.
