Herd Geared Up For Rematch At Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - On Saturday, the Marshall University men's basketball team will look to sweep the season series as it takes on Southern Miss at 6 p.m. ET at Reed Green Coliseum.The game will be televised on CSS and on WSAZ-TV in the Charleston/Huntington, W.Va. market.
Marshall grabbed its first C-USA road win of the season, taking a 63-62 win last time out at Houston. In a game that featured a season-high 13 lead changes, the Herd was able to overcome a late deficit to escape with the win.
DeAndre Kane led Marshall with 24 points and tied his career-high in rebounds with nine. Junior Aundra Williams had his biggest moment of his tenure with the Thundering Herd, scoring what would be the game-winning shot at Houston. Williams was able to score after grabbing the rebound from a blocked shot.
The Golden Eagles are 17-5 overall and 6-3 in league play. Since falling in Huntington in January, USM has gone 5-2 and have won their last three games. Southern Miss took a 75-71 win at UAB last time out. The Golden Eagles have been especially tough at home, going 9-1 at Reed Green Coliseum with their lone loss coming to Memphis, 76-75.
Gary Flowers leads the Golden Eagles and C-USA with 20.2 points per game. He also leads USM with 7.4 rebounds per contest and 36 blocked shots. R.L. Horton averages 12.5 PPG for USM while D.J. Newbill has averaged 9.3 PPG over the course of the season.
Flowers once again flexed his muscle in their win over the Blazers, chipping in 22 points along with five rebounds. Flowers was also the Golden Eagles' top scorer in the first meeting in Huntington, registering 20 points.
Marshall has a 6-4 lead over Southern Mississippi over the course of their series. Since both teams have been in C-USA, they have faced off six times with each team posting three wins. The Herd has won two-straight, ending a three-game Golden Eagles win streak. Marshall is 0-2 at Reed Green Coliseum since 2005, but took a win there in a meeting in 1988.
Following Saturdays game, Marshall returns home on Wednesday to face UAB before taking to the road next weekend to take on East Carolina.
