Huntington, W.Va. - Marshall University's women's soccer team broke open their 2011 season by defeating Longwood University 6-2 in an exhibition match held at Sam Hood Field. The Herd came into the match with great anticipation after making the Conference USA tournament in 2010, and they look to be continuing the trend as they begin the year.

Longwood struck first as Alex Myers propelled the ball through the Marshall net in the opening period, but Angela DeSumma and the Herd wouldn't back down. DeSumma came back with the equalizer in the seventeenth minute, as she scorched a burner past Lancer goalie, Alecia McConnell. Marshall added to their lead with under nine minutes to play in the opening half as freshman Cece Scott weaved her way through the opposing defense to place the ball in the back of the net to give MU the 2-1 advantage.

The Lancers matched Marshall's goal, as Alex Myers notched her second goal of the day to tie the competition at 2-2 at the end of the first of three periods.

From then on it was all Herd as Robin Waskowski drilled a shot inside the box to put Marshall up 3-2. Megan Tabler added some insurance with just over 19 minutes to play in the second period, as she finished a through pass from DeSumma. Junior Chelsey Maiden capped off the second of three periods with a goal of her own.

Maiden then placed another ball softly in the back of the net within the first five minutes of the final period to give Marshall the 6-2 victory.

Coach Kevin Long was excited to see the team play well overall. He noted "It was tough to give up two goals, but I was excited to see role players and freshman make dynamic plays throughout the day." Long also pointed out, "Five of our six goals came from different players, which helps our team excel because it makes it easier to attack the opponents and harder for them to defend."

The Herd fired 19 shots on goal towards the Lancers keeper and totaled 14 corner kicks. Caroline Harwell shared time in the net with Betsy Haugh for Marshall. Harwell posted four saves, while Haugh declined six of the Lancers attempts.

Marshall will prepare for St. Francis University as they open their official regular season on Sunday, August 21.
