Herd Can't Closeout MSU

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University women's soccer team welcomed Morehead State University to Sam Hood Field Sunday riding a recent 4-0 win over Eastern Kentucky University. In an effort to build a two-game winning streak, The Herd posted two early goals, yet could only muster a 2-2 tie, as the Eagles punched in two second period goals.
Senior co-captain Freya Holdaway (Llandrindod Wells, Wales/Llandrindod HS) opened up the scoring attack in the first period at the 14-minute mark by knocking in a header from fellow senior Angela DeSumma (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks East HS). DeSumma fed another goal 12 minutes later to Robin Waskowski (Strongsville, Ohio/Strongsville HS), who headed in her first goal of the season on a corner kick, giving Marshall the 2-0 advantage.
After the halftime break Morehead State tallied its first goal of the afternoon, making the score 2-1. Brittany Kiracofe knocked home a goal, which came from a penalty shot assist from Stephanie Gildehaus. Brittany MacLennan delivered the equalizer for the Eagles at the 77-minute mark, as a MSU corner kick sailed the pack of players leaving MacLennan open for the shot.
Fans in attendance grimaced through the remaining 33 minutes as each team had numerous chances to score down the stretch. Yet after overtime period one and two came to an end, the score remained 2-2.
Marshall posted 14 shots throughout the match. Co-captain Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky./Russell HS) rattled off four shots, which included three on-goal. Robin Waskowski and Freya Holdaway were the two Herd players to score. DeSumma recorded two assists.
Defensively, Betsy Haugh (Earlysville, Ohio/Albemarle HS) saved nine shots for The Herd, opposed to Katie Blevins for MSU, who recorded five.
Coach Kevin Long thought his squad showed great poise in the first half, but let MSU take advantage of too many chances. "We showcased great execution in the first half with two goals, but we have to be better defensively. Giving up two goals is unacceptable. We also have to take advantage of all of our opportunities. Morehead showed that even though their possessions were limited, they found ways to score."
The Herd look to lock down a victory as they travel to Muncie, Ind. to take on the Ball State Cardinals at 4 P.M. on Friday, September 16.
