Huntington, W. Va. - Friday night proved to be a battle as Ohio University defeated the Marshall's women's soccer team 1-0 on a free kick in the first half. The Herd, feeding off a great crowd on "Youth Night", controlled the offensive stats throughout the entire game, yet it was the Bobcats that hung on in the end to secure the victory.
Ohio's Kelsey Pichel tallied the only goal on the night with a free kick at the 24-minute mark in the first period to give the Bobcats the 1-0 advantage. The Herd was aggressive, however, as it ousted Ohio University 10-4 in first half shots and 4-0 on corner kicks.
Play continued to be incredibly intense in the second half, as each team fought for a goal. Marshall again controlled the offensive stats, with a 13-7 shot ratio and 4-1 corner kick ratio in the second period. At the final horn though, the Bobcats walked away victorious.
Leading the way for the Thundering Herd was senior Angela DeSumma (Doylesville, Pa./Central Bucks East HS), who rattled off five shots, including one on goal. Senior co-captain Megan Tabler (Ashland, Ky./Russell HS) along with junior Sarah Vinson (Amelia, Ohio/Amelia HS) each issued three shots, including two and one shot on goal, respectively.
Marshall finished with 23 total shots, including seven shots-on-goal. The Herd owned Ohio on corner kicks 8-1 throughout the match and Betsy Haugh (Earlysville, Va./Albemarle HS) and the MU defense saved five shots.
Coach Kevin Long noted in the post-game, "We can't afford to give teams like Ohio a slight crack thoughout the game because as they showed us, they will take full advantage of it."
Long further addressed, "Looking ahead to Sunday, West Virginia may be looking at our record and counting us out, but our stats prove tonight that we have the ability to put up big numbers. We just need to find a way to finish some of the shots, and make them into goals."
With the loss Marshall drops to 1-3-0 on the year. The Herd look to upset #24 West Virginia as MU travels to Morgantown to face the Mountaineers on Sunday, September 4 at 7:30 P.M. Live stats for the game can be seen .
