Marshall Preps for Showdown with Wildcats

HURRICANE, W.Va. -- The Marshall University men's soccer team will square-off with its second Conference USA opponent in four days as the University of Kentucky Wildcats meet the Thundering Herd at Hurricane High School for a 7 p.m. showdown on Wednesday.
Having downed South Carolina by a 2-1 score last Saturday, the third place Herd (10-1-1, 2-1) will look to add to its conference total of six points with a victory over the sixth place Wildcats (6-6-1, 1-1-1) on Wednesday night. Kentucky will arrive having recently defeated No. 25 UAB, 2-1 on the road for its first C-USA win and second victory over a nationally ranked opponent this season.
Marshall is 14-13-3 all-time against the Wildcats, whom they defeated 2-0 when the two squads met in Lexington last season. Herd goalkeeper Daniel Withrow earned a shutout on the night with three saves, while Diego Ayala - no longer with the team - and Tom Jackson scored the Marshall goals.
Jackson, the Herd's leading scorer this fall, did not play in the most recent South Carolina match and will be questionable for the Kentucky game. Freshman Jesus Mafouta started in place of the injured Jackson against the Gamecocks and tallied one shot for the night.
A win would improve the Herd's point total in the conference to nine, and with four games to play would leave the team just four points shy of the 13 that were required for Marshall to advance to the C-USA Championships last season. SMU currently leads the league with 12 points through five games played.
