HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. - A three-pointer from South Dakota State's Chad White in the final seconds of the game, doomed the Marshall men's basketball team to a 78-77 loss to the Jackrabbits Saturday at the Mack Sports Complex.

The Thundering Herd (2-2) held a 77-72 lead with 20.1 seconds to play after a D.D. Scarver three-pointer. Brayden Carlson then hit a three to make it a two-point game, 77-75 with 11.9 remaining. The Herd's Chris Martin missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity at the free throw line which gave SDSU the ball with 10 seconds to play.

White's three-point shot came unguarded and left just 2.1 seconds remaining. DeAndre Kane's half-court heave was off target as the game which saw 10 ties and 10 lead changes, ended with the Herd down one.

The Herd will play its third game in three days Sunday at 3 p.m. as it will play the host school, Hofstra in the final game of the 2K Sports Classic benefiting Wounded Warrior Project.

"We didn't get the job done defensively and let two late three's beat us," said head coach Tom Herrion. "The three-point shot beat us the entire day. Our three-point defense hurt us mightily today."

The Jackrabbits (2-2) made 11-of-21 three-point attempts, good for 52.4 percent. The Herd hit 8-of-23 for 34.8 percent.

"Their (SDSU) spacing is very good," Herrion said. "They have a good skill level and shoot the ball really well. We are going to play teams that are very similar in that regard."

Marshall lost despite outrebounding SDSU 42-29.

Leading the rebounding effort for the Herd was junior forward Elijah Pittman with 14 boards, seven offensive, to go with 16 points for his first double-double of the season.

Kane scored a team-high 19 points on 7-of-18 shooting including 2-of-5 from three-point range. As the team's point guard, he recorded eight assists to just three turnovers while playing 39 minutes.

Juniors Dennis Tinnon and Scarver also scored in double figures with 10 points each. Tinnon was 4-of-7 from the field and added nine rebounds. Scarver was 4-of-9 from the field including 2-of-6 from three-point range.

Carlson led the Jackrabbits with 23 points on 5-of-7 shooting from three-point range. Preseason All-American candidate Nate Wolters scored 22 points and had 10 assists.
