HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall softball will tangle with an old foe, the Chattanooga Mocs in a single game Wednesday from Jim Frost Stadium starting at 5 p.m. ET.
The Mocs (19-13, 5-2 SoCon) lead the all-time series between the once Southern Conference mates 20-9, but this will be the first meeting between the two since 2008.
Marshall (20-14, 8-4 C-USA) is coming off a three game sweep of the offensive minded UTEP Miners in El Paso, Texas. The Thundering Herd was solid at the plate with a team batting average of .357. Alysia Hively and Alianna Telles were the plate leaders, as each hit over .600 for the three game set.
Telles' batting average of .636 was good enough to earn the C-USA Hitter of the Week award. The senior had seven hits, including a career four in game two on Saturday. The senior has reached base the past seven times at the dish with six consecutive hits and a walk and in total she has reached first base in nine of her last ten plate appearances. The California native has now made it to first base in 11 straight games.
The weekend wins gave head coach Shonda Stanton career victory no. 400. She has collected 373 of her wins while at the helm of the Herd. The road sweep also improved Marshall's road record to 8-2 and 6-0 in conference.
The Mocs will provide another stiff test offensively for Marshall. Chattanooga combine strong pitching has a team average of .339; the eighth best figure in the nation and their slugging percentage (.549) and doubles per game (1.72) are ninth and seventh respectively in the NCAA. Michelle Fuzzard leads the Chattanooga attack with a .452 batting average, which is one of three averages on the team that is plus .400. Fuzzard also leads the squad in RBI's (38) and doubles (11).
