HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall women's soccer will open the regular season Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. when the Thundering Herd hosts the Ball State Cardinals at Huntington High School.
Ball State, which leads the all-time series 4-2-1, defeated Marshall 2-0 on September 16 of last season. After a strong defensive effort saw the game creep into the waning minutes still scoreless, Ball State connected for its first goal in the 85th minute before netting another only one minute later. Alyssa Ables and Becca Sutton were the goal-scorers for Ball State and return to the Cardinals after a 9-9-3 overall record in 2011.
Despite losing its leading goal-scorer and point-getter in Angela DeSumma (six goals, three assists in 2011), Marshall returns seven starters to its 2012 ranks.
Senior Chelsey Maiden, who scored only one goal last season, notched the Herd's only goal in a 2-1 preseason exhibition loss to Longwood last Saturday. For the upcoming regular season, Maiden's offensive attack will revolve around her and fellow seniors Sarah Vinson and Robin Waskowski who orchestrate the midfield. Vinson recorded two goals and an assist last season, placing her third on the Herd's points-list.
Gametracker will be available for Friday's contest and can be accessed through HerdZone.com.
