Tennis Looks to Regain Bragging Rights This Weekend

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- Marshall tennis looks to expand on its 2-0 record this weekend when the Herd takes on West Virginia on Saturday at 1 p.m. and No. 52 Virginia Tech on Sunday at 11 a.m. Both matches will be held at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W.Va.
HAVE YOU HERD?
The Herd is coming off a two wins to open the season, after sweeping the Radford Highlanders 7-0 and defeating Morehead State 5-2.
Senior Karli Timko (Houston, Pa.), junior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada), and freshmen Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) and Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) are boasting back-to-back victories entering Saturday's match. The four remain undefeated in singles action.
Sophomore Dana Oppinger (Weingarten, Germany) is ranked no. 18 in the ITA Atlantic region latest poll.
SCOUTING THE MOUNTAINEERS
The Mountaineers are coming off a 6-1 loss to Liberty University. Sophomore Hailey Barrett tallied her first singles victory of the spring, 6-0, 6-1 against Liberty, while the freshman tandem of Oana Manole and Kaja Mrgole stayed unbeaten in doubles play. The duo is ranked No. 9 in the ITA Atlantic Region latest poll.
Sophomores Vivian Tsui and Barrett, and Manole and Mrgole lead WVU in singles play this season, each with a victory in one of the two matches. . In last year's matchup, the Herd fell 4-3.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
The Hokies moved up two spots in the ITA Rankings to No. 52 despite two losses in Ann Arbor, Mich., last weekend. Tech fell to No. 11 Michigan, 6-1, and No. 28 Tulsa, 4-2, in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend hosted by Michigan.
Virginia Tech boasts four individuals ranked in the Atlantic Region Top 20, with two doubles teams nabbing ranking as well. The Hokies, currently with a 2-2 record, will face Davidson Saturday before coming to Huntington.
UP NEXT
The Herd travels to Lexington to battle No. 40 Kentucky on Feb. 8, and will then head north to State College, Pa., to play No. 50 Penn State on Feb. 14.
