CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- The Marshall tennis team put on an impressive showing in doubles action on Friday at the UVa Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. Both pairings ended up in the finals, with a veteran group in the championship match and a rookie duo in the consolation finals.

"We did a great job in doubles," head coach John Mercer said. "We took three of four, and we showed huge improvement from the last couple weeks and what we've learned in those weeks. They made big strikes and it was really encouraging. Even though we lost three of four in singles, it was still a really positive day of play and hopefully we can carry that into tomorrow."

The sophomore duet of Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) dominated its way into the finals of the Blue Flight, where they will face Huntington native Cassie Mercer and her partner, Marie Faure, of UVa in the championship match.

Turhan and Pomyatinskaya defeated an Arkansas pair in its opening match 8-7 (4), and continued to battle, topping a South Carolina pair 8-7.

Freshmen twosome Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) fell to Mercer/Faure in its opening match 8-1, but proceeded to trump an Old Dominion duo 8-5 to finish the day in the consolation finals.

Silver and Bogicevic will face the Northwestern pairing of Rooney/Chatt for the fifth place final.

On the singles spectrum, Silver was the lone victor on the day, picking up a 6-2, 6-0 defeat over Arkansas' Mia Jurasic. She will next face Northwestern's Erin Larner in the quarterfinals of Blue Flight play.

Bogicevic battled in her singles match, taking the first set 6-4, but falling in the latter 6-2, 7-6. Turhan was defeated by nationally ranked Stephanie Nauta of UVA 6-3, 6-2.

Bogicevic, Turhan, and Pomyatinskaya will all compete in consolation matches tomorrow.
