HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - A penalty kick in the 50th minute by junior Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) was all Marshall women's soccer (5-4-3, 2-1-1) needed to defeat UTSA (5-7-1, 1-4-0) on a rainy Friday evening, 1-0, at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.

After a scoreless first half, UTSA was called for foul inside the box in the 50th minute, and Culicerto stepped up for the penalty kick attempt. She buried it in the top right corner of the net to put Marshall up, 1-0. The Herd's back line stepped up and held the Roadrunners to zero shot attempts in the next 35 minutes, sealing the shutout for Marshall.

AGAINST THE ROADRUNNERS
Marshall led the score sheet in shots (17-2) and corner kicks (7-2). Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.) made one save for the Herd and turned in her second blank sheet of the season. Her 11 career shutouts ranks No. 2 in the Herd record book.

THE CULICERTO CONNECTION
The Herd has won all but one game when a Culicerto sister scores a goal in 2014 (4-1-2), with the only loss of 2-1 coming at Miami (Ohio) (Sept. 19). Senior Kristine leads Marshall with six goals and 13 points, while junior Kelly claims team-highs of 38 shots, 17 shots on goal and three game-winners.

LONG STORY SHORT
Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:

On dealing with the rain:
"We tried to ignore the elements. It wasn't windy, and the field drains beautifully. That's one of the perks of having a turf field. We kept our focus on the task at hand. We did discuss the slick surface and how we didn't want anyone to lazily reach for a ball. We had all those scoring chances, again, and we didn't capitalize on them, again. That's what took more of our focus during this game rather than the elements."

On the Herd's defense allowing only two shots:
"That's a pretty dominating defensive scenario. Even when they were able to break through our midfield, they weren't able to break into our box very often."
