CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.-Marshall tennis competed in its second day at the UVa Invitational, with freshman Maddie Silver (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) shining on day two.

"Anna [Pomyatinskaya] gets better every day and every time she plays," head coach John Mercer said. "She lost, but she continues to improve each time she takes the court. She had match point in the second set before succumbing, and fought the entire time. Marija [Bogicevic] sprained her ankle yesterday, and she was still able to compete today so that was really good. The girls beat some really good competitors from some really good teams, so it was a good day."

Silver played in the quarterfinals of Blue Flight play, falling to Northwestern's Erin Larner 6-2, 6-2. She went on to defeat the Cavaliers' Marie Faure 6-4, 6-3, and will play in the fifth place match on Sunday.

Fellow rookie Marija Bogicevic (Belgrade, Serbia) had to retire after splitting sets due to a sprained ankle.

Sophomore Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) was also defeated in her consolation match. Pomyatinskaya fell to Northwestern's Rischbieth 6-1, 6-3 and Old Dominion's Peri in a grueling 4-6, 7-6, 6-4 battle.

Turhan later defeated South Carolina's Folland 6-4, 6-3, and will play on Sunday versus Northwestern's Peri.

Marshall will conclude the tournament with two doubles matches, as well as the completion of singles matches, on Sunday.
