Herd Softball Dominates Bobcats in Double Header

Oct. 12, 2014 HUNTINGTON, W.Va.- The Marshall softball team posted two 8-0 run-rule victories over the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats Sunday afternoon at Dot Hicks Field, making the team a perfect 7-0 in its fall exhibition season.
GAME 1
Scoring started for the Herd in the first inning with a home run from junior Shaelynn Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.) that also drove in freshman Elicia D'Orazio (Clermont, Fla.). In the second and third, the Herd would add runs from senior Emileigh Cooper (Jackson, Ohio) and Braxton to make the score 4-0.
In the 5th inning, four runs came across the plate for Marshall to round out the score.
Sophomore Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.) batted 2-3 with one run and two RBI on the day. Braxton also hit 2-3 with three runs and two RBI from the homer. Junior Raquel Escareno (Wellington, Colo.) batted 2-3 with one run and two RBI for Marshall as well with a home run of her own. Junior Alyssa Woodrum (West Hamlin, W.Va.) (1-2) also batted in a run for Marshall.
In the circle, sophomore Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) earned the win with a commanding five innings pitched and six strikeouts and just one walk and two hits allowed.
GAME TWO
Marshall would score four runs in the first, with D'Orazio, Braxton, junior Katalin Lucas (Agua Dulce, Calif.) and Alyssa Woodrum (two-run home run) scoring for the Herd. Freshman Madi Marshall (St. Albans, W.Va.), Sophomore Taylor Estes (Danville, KY) and Cooper would also score for the Herd. Braxton hit 1-2 with two runs and two RBI for the Herd, while Woodrum (1-2) also drove in two runs. D'Orazio hit 2-3 with one run and one RBI, while Cooper and Lucas also hit RBIs for Marshall.
Freshman Marissa Bethke (Riverside, Calif.) earned the win for Marshall, with just two hits allowed in a strong performance.
