BLACKSBURG, Va. - Marshall tennis turned in a perfect day at the ITA Atlantic Regional in Blacksburg, Va., on Saturday, with two singles wins and a doubles victory.
Sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) each won their opening matches in the singles main draw of 64 competitors, and then paired up for doubles main draw success.
"They both did a really good job today," head coach John Mercer said. "They did what they needed to do. We will have tougher matches tomorrow, so we will have to raise the level of our game a little. We've been working hard, and they both did a good job doing what we've been trying to get them to do this fall."
Turhan trumped Maria Khval of Liberty 6-3, 6-3 and Broomfield defeated James Madison's Dylan Owens 6-2, 6-3.
Both girls advance to the round of 32, where Broomfield will face fifth seeded Nikol Hristova, of conference foe Old Dominion. Turhan will play Virginia Tech's Raluca Mita, whom she faced last spring in doubles action.
In pairs action, Broomfield and Turhan teamed up for first time in competition of their careers, defeating the Duquesne duo of Isaacs/Stelmaszek 8-4. The Herd will next face sixth seeded Ilinca Stoica and Mita (VT) in the next round of the doubles main draw.
