HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The Marshall men's soccer team (2-5-2) lost its first home Conference USA match of the season in a 3-0 defeat to the Florida Atlantic Owls (1-5-2). 657 fans attended the green out at Hoops Family Field at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex.
AGAINST THE OWLS
The Thundering Herd outshot the Owls by a margin of 15-8, but FAU was able to get five shots on goal to Marshall's four.
The first goal was scored in the 16th minute when Jason Fitzgerald received a pass over the top from Deniz Bozkurt. Fitzgerald was able to chip the ball over Marshall goalkeeper Dominik Reining (Frankfurt, Germany) from the 18 yard box for the goal, his first of the season.
In the 60th minute, Ramon Whittaker collected a rebound on the right side of the 18 yard box and launched a screamer past Reining to the upper far corner of the net for his second goal of the season and the second goal of the contest.
Whittaker would score a brace (two goals in one match) in the 64th minute, when he received a cross on a run from Daniel Montoya and again shot past Reining for his third goal of the season.
Marshall's Jack Hopkins (Birmingham, Ala.) led the way for The Herd in terms of shots with four and two on goal. Nick Edginton also shot four times, with one on goal.
THE GRAY AREA
Marshall coach Bob Gray on Flordia Atlantc match:
We had 15 shots to their 8 and had 10 corners, but to their credit they took a page out of our book the last few games and played solid defense, then used the counter to score."
"We haven't scored in two games. We had those two recently in our wins against Evansville and South Carolina, but other than that, we are struggling offensively. We need to find someone that can score a goal, even if it isn't pretty."
