@HerdWSoccer Draws with Old Dominion, 1-1 (2OT)
10/5/2014 12:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer
NORFOLK, Va. - Senior Kristine Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) scored her team-high sixth goal for Marshall women's soccer (4-4-3, 1-1-1) in a 1-1 draw after double overtime against Old Dominion (3-6-3, 2-1-1) on Sunday at ODU Soccer Complex.
Marshall earned its fourth point in the Conference USA standings with the draw.
The Lady Monarchs got on the scoreboard first when Devin Dougherty put one past Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.), assisted by Jessie Klamut and Morgan Vezina in the 21st minute. At the end of the first half, the Herd trailed shots (9-4) and had not taken a corner kick (6-0).
Coming out of the break, Marshall began to pick up the pace offensively, outshooting Old Dominion 9-1 over the next 30 minutes. The Herd finally found an equalizer in the 81st minute when junior Jenna Dubs (Green Lane, Pa.) placed a free kick inside the box to Culicerto, who struck it past ODU keeper Meredith Lenox. Neither team could find a go-ahead score in the final nine minutes of regulation, so the match headed into overtime.
Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) took the Herd's only shot of either overtime at Lenox, who made the save. ODU took a combined seven shots in the two overtimes, placing one on target. Time ran out with the score knotted at 1, ending the match in a draw.
AGAINST THE LADY MONARCHS
Old Dominion led the Herd in shots (19-17) and corners (11-2). Lenox (1-2-2) made six saves for the Lady Monarchs while Kish (4-4-3) made five for Marshall, with each keeper taking a goal against.
THE CULICERTO CONNECTION
The Herd has won all but one game when a Culicerto sister scores a goal in 2014 (3-1-2), with the only loss of 2-1 coming at Miami (Ohio) (Sept. 19). Senior Kristine leads Marshall with six goals, 13 points and 15 shots on goal, while junior Kelly claims team-highs of 32 shots and two game-winners.
LONG STORY SHORT
Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:
On his perception of the team's performance:
"We'll take the tie, but I was disappointed with our play today. It was a Sunday game after a Friday overtime win, but we came out really flat today. I give credit to Old Dominion. They came out with more energy than we did. It was the little things that we didn't do well - like winning 50/50 balls and things like that which can add up to a contest. It took us a long time to shake off Friday's fatigue. In the second half it looked like we came out with a little more fire, and we were more focused on getting the result."
On what the team can do better during conference play:
"One team was in control of the first half, and one was in control of the second half today. In a conference game you can't do two things: one, you cannot concede 45 minutes of play. Two, you cannot give away a soft goal, which we did today."
