HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Led by career-highs of 23 points by Leah Scott (Detroit) and five 3-pointers by Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.), Marshall women's basketball moved to 3-0 for the first time since 2008-09 with a 74-57 defeat of Maryland Eastern Shore (0-4) on Saturday at Cam Henderson Center.

The win marks the first time Marshall has won three consecutive games under coach Matt Daniel. The three-game streak is also a first since the Herd won a five-game stretch from Dec. 28, 2011 through Jan. 11, 2012.

From 18:28 to 11:30 in the first half, the Herd dominated offensively with a 20-8 run which included a stretch of eight consecutive field goals made. At that point, Marshall led the Hawks 26-10. UMES answered the Herd's run with a 7-0 streak of its own, cutting the lead to nine at 26-17. However, the nine-point deficit would be the closest that the Hawks would come in response. The Herd held its largest halftime lead of the season at 17, up 44-27 going into the break.

Coming out of the break, the Herd wend on a 14-second, 5-0 run to gain its largest lead of the season (24), up 52-28. Marshall would not surrender its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, however, UMES handily out-rebounded the Herd in the second stanza, 32-18. The Herd's offense cooled off a bit, from 48.5 percent in the first half to 35.7 percent in the second. Notably, Victrum was 5-of-5 from long range until 2:47 remained when she missed her first 3-pointer of the contest.

In the end, the Herd came out on top in points off turnovers (24-6) and fast break points (10-2). Marshall went on to claim its largest margin of victory so far this season (17), 74-57.

DANIEL DIALOGUE
Quotes by coach Matt Daniel:
On the overall game
"I'm happy to be 3-0. I thought we got a great opportunity to learn a valuable lesson today. The first half I thought we were pretty good. The second half I thought we got a little satisfied and it showed in our play. We played them evenly the second half. All-in-all we got the chance to learn a valuable lesson and still be 3-0. I'm happy to protect home court."

On the Herd's two-three defense
"We are going to mix it up some. I think we did a good job. We could get on it and get off of it. I thought we did a pretty good job of it. In the second half they killed us in rebounding. At one point they had nine or ten offensive rebounds in a row. Those are energy plays. Today, we are the more talented team, thank heaven, because in the second half they got us."

Norrisha Victrum, junior guard
On shooting threes
"I think having the energy and getting to the open spots allowed me to make my shots and get good looks. Knowing that I was a driver, I took advantage of what the defense gave me."

Leah Scott, senior G/F
On her career high 23 points
"I just settled down and took it slow. I focused on what was at task."

On improvement from last year
"What I think helped is our maturity and working really hard before the season came around. We've been putting up more shots, being in the gym more, running more, and being in better condition."
