CHARLESTON, S.C. - Marshall tennis concluded its fall season on Sunday at the College of Charleston Challenge in Charleston, S.C.

Sophomore Derya Turhan (Bad Salzuflen, Germany), despite losing in her singles match, was a three-way co-winner in the Singles Flight A, tying nationally ranked Silvia Garcia of Georgia and Niriantsa Rasolomalala from Georgia State.

Turhan battled Rasolomalala at the first singles slot, taking the first set 1-6, before dropping the second set in 7-6 heartbreaking fashion, and falling 10-7 in set three.

Fellow second-year Rachael Morales (Reynoldsburg, Ohio) picked up the sole singles win of the day for the Herd, defeating GA State's Masa Grgan 6-3, 6-0.

Marshall held the lead in first doubles in duo Turhan and Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia), but came up short against the Georgia pairing of Garcia and Gould, falling 8-7(3).

MERCER'S MUSINGS

Quotes from head coach John Mercerââ'¬Â¦

On today's playââ'¬Â¦

"We played a lot of really tough matches today, and had some good opportunities. We just couldn't finish. Rachael [Morales[ pulled out a really good win today. She came out tough and played well. We had some chances, but just couldn't win out. Good way to end the fall before break. We're pretty motivated to work hard and start the spring season."

On the overall outcome of the fall seasonââ'¬Â¦

'We're playing tough,, top teams, and we're not dodging anybody. We're playing them and holding our own. Every match we win is a huge match in the fall; we're playing match after match after match with some of the best teams in the entire country , like Georgia and Virginia and South Carolina. We're a young team so we're trying to do this to learn a lot to become a better team this spring. That's kind of our focus."

On the morale of the team as the fall wraps upââ'¬Â¦

"Their confidence grew because of the level of competition we're playing. It's a good opportunity, and we have to realize wins are tough to come by, but we're getting our share, so when we do it's a great win. We have to give those teams a lot of respect, there's a reason they're top in the country, and to get back to where we think we belong, we have to keep fighting our way there. We have a good foundation right now, we have to keep working hard and take these learning experiences and run with them."
