HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall tennis defeated College of Charleston 6-1 in its spring season opener Saturday at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville, W. Va.

Successful doubles play set the tempo for the Herd to start the day. Lone senior Kai Broomfield (Toronto, Canada) teamed with freshman Marija Bogicevic ( Belgrade, Serbia) and earned the first win of the match at No. 3 doubles against Maddox/Jones 6-1.

The doubles point was clinched when duo Rachael Morales ( Reynoldsburg, Ohio) and Maddie Silver ( Grand Rapids, Mich.) defeated McAmis/Argyriou 7-5 at the No. 2 spot. Sophomore pair Derya Turhan ( Bad Salzuflen, Germany) and Anna Pomyatinskaya ( Sochi, Russia) lost a tight 7-5 match on court one.

In singles action, Pomyatinskaya took the first win for the Herd at fifth singles over the Cougars' Helena Nyikos 6-2, 6-3.

Turhan, who battled back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set, defeated Samantha Maddox 7-5, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.

Silver followed up with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Brooke McAmis at No. 2 to secure the win for the Herd.

Broomfield defeated Katherine Schofield at No. 3 singles 3-6, 6-4, 6-3, while Morales defeated Grace Baker 6-2, 5-7, 10-8 to add insurance for the Herd.

Bogicevic's marathon match of 6-7(3), 7-6(3), 10-5 at No. 5 singles was the Marshall's only loss of the day.

Next, Marshall will head to UCLA for the National Indoor Team Tournament in Los Angeles. The team's first match is scheduled Saturday, Jan. 24 against No. 1 UCLA. The Herd will follow with a match facing either No. 64 Kansas State or No. 72 UC-Irvine. Times are yet to be announced.

QUOTES BY COACH John Mercer

"I'm very impressed with the way we performed and competed today. College of Charleston is a tough first match for our young team, and not one of our players backed off throughout the entire match."

"This was a great match to get under our belts. College of Charleston wins a lot of matches and has won many conference championships. We can really take a lot away from this match and focus on what we need to do from here on out."
