MARSHALL
Matt Daniel, head coach
Opening Statement
"It feels odd talking about the game with the passing of Dr. Kopp and things that are really important, outside of college athletics. I can't remember an athletic event, including women's basketball, that he and his wife were not in attendance for. My heart hurts for that family and his wife Jane, and when I called a timeout with a minute left, I told the team, 'You would have made him proud today.' As far as on the floor, we hit shots in the second half that we obviously missed in the first half. We outscored them in the second half, and I thought our kids really battled and did a tremendous job against a defending conference champion in one of the best conferences in the country."
On the preparation for today's game:
"We didn't prepare for them any differently than we did Norfolk State on Tuesday night. We respect everybody, and I mean, I think we're pretty dangerous to prepare for, too."
On cutting the deficit to seven at one point:
"You try and catch momentum and even though I tried to use time-outs to space things out and give rest, I think we got tired. I don't think we ran out of juice, I just think that we got tired. They're bigger than we are, and when you wrestle someone bigger than you, you're going to get tired. They bounced back and kept taking jabs, and they just came back. That's just the game of basketball."
Leah Scott, senior G/F (Most Valuable Player)
On the team's performance:
"We played really hard, but we got off to a very slow start. In the first half, we were very hesitant and we were just trying to feel everybody out. The second half, we just felt more comfortable and did so much better with our shots."
On being down by 20 points at one point but turning a comeback:
"It is a lesson learned. We do that a lot, but I think that what makes us a good team is that we fight back, and we fight hard. We gave them a little run for their money, and maybe had them shaking for a minute. We played really hard, though, and I think that counts for a lot."
Norrisha Victrum, junior guard
On the differences between the first and second half:
"As a team, we hesitated a lot. We didn't knock down a lot of shots, and we played really cold. The difference was, we executed right in the second half and finally got comfortable."
WEST VIRGINIA
Mike Carey, head coach
Opening Statement
"Give Marshall a lot of credit. They took us out of our game a little bit, and Marshall did a lot of good things. We just weren't getting out on the three. We have a lot of new players; Marshall starts four seniors. We have a lot of people just doing a lot of things and there is no organization. We just weren't in sync for some reason."
On Marshall's performance:
"Give them credit. They played hard, and hit some big shots, and continued to play hard for 40 minutes. Give them a lot of credit."
On Lanay Montgomery:
"She wants to get better. She puts extra time in the gym, and you can tell she wants to get better. She has really worked. She hasn't really gotten to play for three years. As the years go on, she's going to get better and better."
Lanay Montgomery, sophomore center (Most Valuable Player)
On what needs to change before facing Big Ten opponent Ohio State:
"We need to work on defensive things, like screens and our guards getting in position. Everyone needs to play hard. We need to focus on that now."
On still coming out strong despite two key players on the bench:
"It was great, and I think that it shows that we are able to score and play hard. People are able to provide when we're down players, and that shows depth for our team."
Teana Muldrow, R-freshman forward
On the performance of teammate Lanay Montgomery:
"Lanay does a good job, and I appreciate her so much. I just want to help her on the court anyway I can. If she's gotten 15 boards, I want to get seven or eight just to help her out. She's tremendous and she's improved so much in the last month."
On the upcoming game with Ohio State:
"That win would definitely look good on our resume and it would build our confidence too. We need to change and work on defense, we can't give up easy shots. We just have to pick it up."
