HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall junior midfielder Kelly Culicerto (Charlotte, N.C.) has been named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Women's All-Central Region second team, it was announced Wednesday.
Culicerto is the third Herd player to earn second-team honors, and the first since Erika Duncan - now assistant coach for Marshall - in 2010. Amanda McMahon earned second-team honors in 2000 and first-team honors in 2001, when the Herd played as a member of the Mid-American Conference.
"For Kelly to be the second player from Marshall in the Conference USA era to earn this award is exciting for us," Herd coach Kevin Long said. "It's a testament to the team playing at a higher level as a result of Kelly's participation. Her involvement speaks volumes about the team around her and I'm really proud of her for earning this award. Overall it reinforces what we've been saying, that Kelly is a common positive after all our games this season, and I'm thrilled that the region recognizes this."
The award extends a list of honors for the midfielder, who in addition to becoming the first player in Marshall history to earn first team All-Conference USA honors, is the first Herd player to earn both first-team All-Academic and all-league honors in a single season. She set career highs of 17 points and eight goals this season en route to Marshall's 7-7-5 record and second consecutive appearance in the Conference USA Tournament.
Culicerto is one of 13 C-USA players representing seven schools to earn a spot on an all-region team, and one of seven league players on the second team.
