HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall place-kicker Justin Haig and kick returner Deandre Reaves were named College Football Performance Awards players of the week at their respective positions for their efforts in the Conference USA Championship Game last Saturday.
Haig, a redshirt senior from Delray Beach, Fla., kicked four field goals – including a C-USA Championship-record and career-long 46-yarder – to held the Thundering Herd to a 26-23 title win over visiting Louisiana Tech. Haig’s four field goals tied the school record.
Haig, who also made two PATs, was voted the game’s Most Valuable Player. He also kicked two 40-yard field goals and a 24-yarder, and he became the first kicker in C-USA Championship history to kick three field goals or 40 or more yards in a title game.
Reaves, a redshirt junior from Sterling, Va., had 88 yards on three kick returns against the Bulldogs. His 44-yarder was the second longest in a C-USA Championship Game. Reaves set the C-USA Championship mark for kick return yards in a game with 118 on five returns last season in a title-game loss at Rice.
Marshall (12-1) accepted a bid Sunday to play in the inaugural Boca Raton Bowl against Mid-American Conference champion Northern Illinois (11-2). The Dec. 23 game (6 p.m., ESPN telecast) at FAU Stadium is the only postseason matchup of FBS conference champions outside the College Football Playoff national semifinals (Ohio State-Alabama, Florida State-Oregon).
