HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall softball is traveling to Conway, S.C., to compete Friday through Sunday in the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Thundering Herd (2-8) will face four teams, and will face host CCU twice.

HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall ended the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic 1-4, falling to two opponents in one-run contests last weekend.
The Herd hit .345 in the tournament and was led by sophomore Shaelynn Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.). The underclassman hit .500, had two doubles and one home run. Her sister, junior Kristina Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.), hit .308 with two doubles, a triple and a team-leading six RBI.
Two Herd players hit in the .400s - sophomore Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.) and freshman Morgan Zerkle (Milton, W.Va.). Greene had a team-high .476 average and had the most hits on the team over the three-day span (10). Zerkle hit an even.400 and was 6-of-6 on stolen bases.
Freshman Lindsey Fadnek (Coalfield, Tenn.) had the team's lowest ERA in the circle with a 5.40 in 10 innings pitched. Rookie Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) had the Herd's sole victory, and led the team with 24 strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE HAWKS (2-7)
Maryland-Eastern Shore last competed in the North Carolina A&T Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The Hawks went 2-2, losing to A&T (9-1) and Morgan State (12-9). Both UMES wins were against Rider (15-6).
Junior Morgan King leads the team with a .500 batting average, three doubles, four home runs, 14 RBI and a 1.077 slugging percentage. In the circle, the Hawks' freshman Kelly Cullen and sophomore Kaitlyn Hitch have the team's two wins, including one shutout victory.
SCOUTING THE CHANTICLEERS (6-3)
Coastal Carolina was in Gainesville, Fla,. last weekend. Despite two games being canceled because of inclement weather, the Chanticleers were able to get through three games in the University of Florida Tournament.
Coastal Carolina went 1-2 with losses to Georgia Southern (3-0) and Troy (4-1). Its sole victory came off a one-run victory over the Eagles, where senior Ashley Baqwell pitched a one-hitter and threw her 500th career strikeout.
The Chanticleers are led offensively by Bri Chiusano, who boasts a .393 batting average after nine games of action. She holds the team's sole triple of the season and has a .464 slugging percentage. Kory Hayden, however, has a .929 slugging percentage with a team-leading five home runs and 12 RBI.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS (13-4)
Most recently, Samford faced off a new Conference USA foe - Middle Tennessee State University. The midweek doubleheader was played in Murfreesboro, Tenn., where the Bulldogs split the day with a 9-7 victory and 6-1 loss.
Samford hit .308 between both games. Sophomore Megan Dowdy was 5-for-8 with a double, while junior Madison Dickey was 4-for-8 with a double. Four members of the Bulldogs' bullpen saw action, splitting time just about equally. The only hurler that did not throw on Tuesday, junior Mollie Hanson, leads the pitching staff with a 2.55 ERA, a 6-3 record and 53 strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE PEACOCKS (0-0)
St. Peter's has yet to see action this season. The Coastal Carolina Invitational will be its first 2014 outing and the host-school will be its first opponent on March 1.
The Peacocks has welcomed four newcomers onto its staff, and is returning 12 players.
In 2013, St. Peter's ended with a 9-45 overall record and was led by returning sophomore Lee Harrison with a .312 batting average, nine home runs and 13 doubles. Returning senior Erica Colon pitched a team leading 106.1 innings and 70 strikeouts. She finished with the team's lowest ERA, a 6.65.
UP NEXT
Marshall will have a quick turnaround time between the Coastal Carolina Invitational and traveling to Boca Raton, Fla., for its first set of C-USA games against Florida Atlantic. The Herd will leave March 4 to face the Owls in conference action, before playing in the FAU Parents' Weekend Tournament on March 7 against No. 14 South Alabama and Michigan State.
