SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - Marshall women's golf completed its best round of the 2013-14 season at Day 1 of the Bobby Nichols Intercollegiate, finishing two strokes behind leader Murray State at Highlands Course at Sevierville Golf Club in Sevierville, Tenn.
"It was so cold and wet today; it was not easy out there," Marshall Coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. "I'm so proud of the girls for hanging in there, but we have a lot of work left tomorrow."
Led by senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio), the Thundering Herd posted a 33-over-par 317 on the par-71, 5,803-yard course. Murray State leads the pack with a 31-over 315. Individually, Thompson sits in a tie for second with Indiana State's Marissa Uradomo at 3-over 74. Marshall placed another golfer in the Top 10 as Gabby Marcum shot a 6-over 77 to tie with four others for eighth.
The Herd's second-place stance marks its best spot since posting a runner-up round at the 2012 Cardinal Classic at The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind., Sept. 22, 2012. Marshall finished in fourth at that tournament.
After Day 1 action, the Herd stands:
Rachel Thompson - T2 (74)
Gabby Marcum - T8 (77)
Sarah Helly - T21 (81)
Korakot Simsiriwong - T41 (85)
Natalie Irwin - T60 (89)
Marshall will continue competition tomorrow in the final round at Highlands Course at Sevierville Golf Club.
