HAVE YOU HERD?
Marshall just concluded its first home week of the 2014 season at Dot Hicks Field, and did so against two nationally ranked opponents.
The Herd faced No. 8 Kentucky on Tuesday and fell 6-2 to the Wildcats. Marshall could not claim a victory from No. 19 Tulsa in a three-game matchup, falling to 1-5 in conference action.
Through the week, the Herd was led offensively by junior Kristina Braxton (Woodbridge, Va.), who batted .375 with a double and three RBI. Close behind Braxton was sophomore Kaelynn Greene (Eastvale, Calif.), who connected four times for a .364 average in the four-game span, while scoring two runs and drawing two walks.
Freshman Jordan Dixon (Edmond, Okla.) posted a 3.72 ERA in three appearances, with two complete games and a total of 19.1 innings. She fanned 13 batters on the week.
SCOUTING THE SEAHAWKS (12-13)
UNC-Wilmington is on a three-game losing streak, last facing Presbyterian in a three-game series.
The Seahawks are led offensively by senior Brittany Gamby, who boasts a .381 average and a team-leading 24 hits, 34 total bases and nine sacrifice hits.
In the circle, junior Casey Rowland and freshman Peyton Jordan split most of the responsibilities. While Rowland holds a 6-5 record, Jordan has a 5-7 mark. Both have made 16 appearances.
SERIES HISTORY (Marshall vs. ECU)
The Pirates have a one-game advantage over the Herd in the overall series between the two schools (16-15).
The two last met in the first round of the 2013 C-USA Tournament, where Marshall took a one-run victory (5-4) over ECU. However, in regular season play, the Pirates swept the Herd at Dot Hicks Field.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES (15-8, 4-2 C-USA)
ECU will be facing Marshall after a 2-1 series victory over Charlotte. The Pirates took games one (4-3) and two (11-6) from the 49ers, before dropping the final game in a shutout fashion (4-0).
Senior Shelby Johnson is leading the team in several offensive categories. Being the sole .400 hitter with a .413 overall batting average, she also leads the Pirates in hits (31), stolen bases (18) and is tied for the most runs (21) and doubles (5) with junior Abby Wynne.
With 21 appearances and 16 starts, junior Sarah Christian is the Pirates' go-to hurler. In 97.0 innings pitched, Christian has 62 strikeouts and a 2.24 ERA.
UP NEXT
The Herd will travel back to Huntington, W.Va. to face Miami (Ohio) in a midweek contest next Wednesday, before heading to Starkville, Miss. to face Mississippi State in a three-game series March 29-30.
