KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. - At the conclusion of Day 1 competition at the Kiawah Island Classic, Sunday, Marshall women's golf secured a 30th-place position out of a 36-team field.

The Thundering Herd shot a 49-over-par 337 in the first round, 46 strokes behind pace-setter Troy, which leads the pack at a 3-over 291. Three teams follow closely behind at 4-over 292: No. 38/40 Kent State (Golfstat.com/Golfweek), No. 89 Jacksonville State (Golfweek), and St. John's.

"It was somewhat of a struggle today," coach Meredith Knight Rowsey said. "We're mostly trying to get over nerves, which lasted a little longer than the first tee. I am sure that tomorrow will be better for us as a whole, having a round under our belt now."

Senior Rachel Thompson (Mansfield, Ohio) had the best day of the five-player Herd squad, finishing in the Top 100 participants at No. 98 with an 8-over 80.

After Day 1 on the 5,902 Oak Point Course, the Herd stands:

Rachel Thompson - T98 (80)
Sarah Helly - T112 (81)
Korakot Simsiriwong - T160 (88)
Gabby Marcum - T160 (88)
Ashley DeMoss - T183 (93)

Marshall will continue competition tomorrow at the par-72, 6,001-yard Cougar Point Course, beginning at 9:55 a.m.
