Tennis Looks to Torch Flames, Sting Jackets

HUNTINGTON, W. Va. -- The Marshall tennis team returns home Saturday after more than a month of road matches to face No. 74 Liberty and West Virginia State, ranked No. 48 in NCAA Division II. The Herd will face Liberty at 11 a.m. and will return to the courts against WVSU at 5 p.m. Both matches will be held at the Huntington Tennis Club in Barboursville.
HAVE YOU HERD?
Since earning its first ranking of the 2014 season two weeks ago, Marshall tennis is 3-1, only falling to No. 34 Indiana (then No. 53).
Marshall senior Karli Timko (Houston, Pa.) continues to lead the team with a 9-2 record in singles play. Freshman Anna Pomyatinskaya (Sochi, Russia) follows her with an 8-3 singles record.
SCOUTING THE FLAMES
Liberty made history this week, earning its first ITA national ranking in program history at No. 74. Liberty is the lone Big South member to receive a national ranking this season.
The Flames are 7-3 (2-1 Big South) this season and are led by freshman Maria Khval, who posts a 7-3 singles record.
Marshall will be the second ranked opponent for the Flames this season. They lost 7-0 to No. 58 Kansas State (then No. 53).
SCOUTING THE YELLOW JACKETS
The Yellow Jackets begin their spring season against the Herd after an undefeated fall season at 12-0.
Coming off a Mountain East Conference championship this past fall, the Jackets return two seniors in Amber Schneider and Andreea Slusarciuc, who is a the three-time defending MEC Tournament champion.
Sophomores Brittany Franco, Diana Cotoros, and Charlotte Sandy all had undefeated conference records in the fall.
West Virginia State is ranked No. 48 (out of 50) in Division II, and owns a No. 3 ranking in the Division II Atlantic Region.

Marshall tennis will head to the Beehive State for Spring Break, stopping in Salt Lake City to face No. 44 Utah on Tuesday, March 18, then heading to Provo to face BYU on March 20.
