HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Junior Erin Simmons' (Gahanna, Ohio) penalty kick conversion aided Marshall women's soccer (2-2-2) to a 1-1 decision with the Cincinnati Bearcats (4-1-2) after double overtime at Veterans Memorial Soccer Complex on Friday evening.

Simmons' penalty kick was Cincinnati's first allowed goal in 247 minutes, spanning three matches. Forty-seven seconds before halftime, the Bearcats were called for a foul in the box. Simmons was called up for the kick, and she chipped it to the top right corner of the net to put the Herd up, 1-0, going into the break.

Six minutes into the second half, Emily Elsbrock caught a rebound off Megan Cravenor and chipped it past Marshall keeper Lizzie Kish (Boyertown, Pa.), equalizing the game at 1-1 for Cincinnati. Time ran out in regulation before either team could steal a go-ahead goal, resulting in overtime. The extra two periods saw five shots taken between the two teams, but neither could convert and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.

AGAINST THE BEARCATS
Cincinnati let shots (17-8) and corner kicks (13-1) and the Herd made six saves to the Bearcats' three. The physical matchup produced a combined 45 fouls between the teams.

LONG STORY SHORT
Quotes by Coach Kevin Long:

On the matchup with Cincinnati:
"Cincinnati is a good team. We've played them often in the spring, including this past spring. I'd say we've had our way with them in the spring, but I think they turned the tables a bit on us today. By all statistical categories, I'd say that we were hanging on through most of the game. We had a bit of a problem holding on to the ball and I give credit to Cincinnati. They're athletic and tall and took a lot of balls in the air, and that's usually something we're pretty good at. They beat us a bit at our own game."

On junior Erin Simmons moving up in the Marshall record book:
"Erika Duncan, our assistant, is challenging Erin to go after her records*. She thinks it makes us better and makes us have some success, so she's all for it."

*Note: Erika Duncan (2007-2010) holds the Marshall record for career goals (23). She was named assistant coach for the Herd in March 2014. Simmons has 12 career goals.

On Simmons' performance against Cincinnati:
"I was glad to see Erin step to it today. She did well to get the penalty kick, in the first place. She finished it beautifully and I was glad to see her get her confidence up. It was a great PK, and hopefully that continues to help her confidence. We need her to continue to play well if we're going to have success down the stretch."

SUPER SIMMONS
With her penalty kick against Cincinnati (Sept. 12), junior Erin Simmons (Gahanna, Ohio) gained sole possession of eighth place in the Herd record book with 12 career goals. Additionally, her five game-winning goals, 108 shots and 29 points rank Nos. 4, 6 and 9 all-time, respectively.
