HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-Marshall volleyball defeated border rival Morehead State in its first home dual match of 2014, sweeping the Eagles in straight sets on Tuesday.

Marshall improved to 5-6 on the season, while Morehead dropped to 0-10.

The Herd took demanding leads in each set, winning by scores of 25-17, 25-13, 25-14. The team posted a season-high hitting percentage of .356.

Junior Lauren Legge (Pliny, W.Va.) led the squad, recording 10 kills. Sophomore Ally Kiekover (Grand Rapids, Mich.) collected seven, and junior Jillian Shemanski (Jupiter, Fla.) and sophomore Cassie Weaver (Huntington) each turned in six kills.

Shemanski recorded a .750 hitting efficiency with two solo blocks and assisted in two more. Kiekover also hit above .500, recording a .545 hitting percentage.

"Today was really the first time our offense led the way," head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Sammie [Bane] and Kayla [Simmons] did a really nice job of getting our hitters the ball in situations to be successful."

"I am proud of the way Lauren went after her attacks today and led us in kills to go with great efficiency from Jill and Kiko," Jacobs finished.

In the first set, Marshall took its biggest lead of the set by six points. In the final two games, the Herd only increased its advantage, leading by 10 in set 2 and nine in the third set.

In game 2, Marshall's lead started to grow after the Herd took nine of eleven points in the middle of the set. In that sequence, Weaver put up three kills and Legge provided two.

With the 2-0 lead heading into the third game, the Eagles started off battling, remaining within two points of the Herd until three Morehead miscues in a row gave Marshall insurance. The Herd continued to increase its advantage, winning 11 of the next 14 points before coming to a 25-14 victory.

Marshall hits the road again this weekend, traveling to Blacksburg, Va. for the Hokie Invitational sponsored by Virginia Tech. In addition to VT, the Herd will also face UNC-Wilmington and Radford.
